Book Review: Bollocks! Anthology

Bollocks as a word is a little naughty. It's a little cheeky. It's a little rude. And it's the tongue-in-cheek theme for this collection of short stories celebrating all things English. You'll discover a bonk is not a typo for somewhere to keep your money. A shag isn't something thick and plush under your feet to keep them warm, thought it is guaranteed to heat you up! And as for a snog, the books of Bollocks! can assure you it's worth finding out with that Brit term means.

The stories will make you laugh.

They'll make you snort.

They'll make you blush.

Sigh - they'll probably make you shake you head.

They may even make you want to catch the next flight to England to find something a little British of your own. It's not just cricket, or jolly hockey sticks, it's more...it's very British, Bollocks!

                                                                         *~*~*~*

I was very excited when I was presented with this anthology filled with all things British. Even though I'm American, I've always been fascinated by British culture, the accents and definitely the men, so this anthology was right up my alley!

Overall, I thought the anthology had a good mix of stories covering a variety of topics like shape shifters, best friends falling in love, and meeting the man of your dreams in the unlikeliest of places.

Healing by Tabitha McGowan - 3 stars
When shifter, Immanuil, seeks the help of an elusive healer who can help mend his badly infected hand, he learns that the healer before him is not only a kind and helpful soul, but is also hunted by others because of his special talents.

I liked the easy rapport between the MCs and appreciated the vulnerabilities both characters displayed. The underlying message of people who are hunted or sought out (to eventually be destroyed) due to their differences from what society deems "normal" is more relevant today than ever.

Sheep's Clothing by Elin Gregory - 3.5 stars
Werewolf and plumber extraordinaire, Darren Murchison, has just moved to the Welsh countryside for a change in scenery and to help hide his secret. Little does he know that he now lives in a village of shifters, particularly a tall, bear of man, Gethin, who is rough around the edges, but definitely has a soft side.

Even though I knew, going into this story, that it was about werewolves, I found the choice of animal to represent the village shifters refreshing, different and unexpected. The relationship between the two MCs developed at a good pace and I could almost feel the sexual tension rolling off of them in waves.

It Could Be You by Anyta Sunday - 3 stars
Cute story about childhood friends and roommates. Ted has just won the lottery for £15 million, but cannot remember where he put the ticket. He and his best friend and crush, Jenson, retrace their steps, but Jenson has something very important he needs to get of his chest.

This is a cute and uncomplicated GFY story. Readers learn how the MCs became so close and get a glimpse of their secret feelings for one another.  A nice, quick read.

Just Like Pulling Teeth by L.J. Harris - 4.5 stars
When Aiden Cooper visits a new dentist to have his wisdom teeth removed, he never imagined the man would be one of the sexiest men he's ever met. Tall, dark and handsome, Sebastian Gibbs is enchanted by his patient and hopes they can get to know each other better...if only Aiden could be as brave and forthcoming without laughing gas!

This is an adorable story that I really enjoyed. All of the characters are very likable and I found myself not only rooting for the couple, but wishing I had a Sebastian of my very own. Sebastian speaking Portuguese was extremely sexy and, like Aiden, I immediately fell under his spell.

DIY Delights by Taylin Clavelli - 3 stars
Nice story about an established couple, Duncan and Mike, as they renovate their new home and Duncan explains his immense love of bollocks...in all forms and meanings.

In the Blue Moonlight by H. Lewis-Foster - 3 stars
Simon and Mark first met under rather comical circumstances. Some time later they are properly introduced and develop a comfortable relationship. The only problem is that Mark, a police officer, never comes to Simon's house and never invites Simon to his. Simon begins to worry that Mark isn't being as up front as he should and decides to end things. Is he just overreacting or does Mark truly have a deep, dark secret?

Sweet and uncomplicated, In the Blue Moonlight is a nice story with nice characters. I sometimes felt like the story was a bit rushed, but overall it was an enjoyable, quick read.

It's Written in the Stars by Lily Velden - 4 stars
Sebastian Robson is encouraged by his best friend, Declan, to try out for the dating show Written in the Stars. Sebastian is very reluctant, but Declan, who also happens to work on the show, assures him that he'll help Sebastian put his best foot forward. However, when the cameras start rolling, will Sebastian stick to the coaching he's received or go his own way?

Adorable, funny and silly, It's Written in the Stars had me chuckling out loud. I liked how utterly awkward Sebastian is, but at the same time I respected that he could only be himself when it came down to it. I wouldn't mind reading about Sebastian, or even Declan, in a future story since all of the characters were quite likable and relatable.
